Do you believe in
repentance? Does repentance provide redemption? Is redemption
necessary for salvation? Can the redeemed only be saved through
repentance? Is this a puzzle?
Maybe. But the simple truth is that the goal of every Christian, of every human being should be to align himself with the desires of his Maker. Therein lies salvation for the redeemed, for the believer. The word "repentance" was a turn-off to me in my early years of spiritual development. Repent? I had nothing to repent about. I thought. Ten, twelve years old. I had committed no sin. My gravitation to God had to come more from the realization of God's love, an awesome feel of his omnipotent power, and the inescapable reality the he provides the surest path to success and true happiness. And yet it is possible to be born into sin, out of no fault of your own. It is possible to be born with and into conditions that are not of your own making. "Some fell by the way side." And they were choked up by thorns. It is possible to be born into an environment that is not conducive to financial, economic or spiritual success. Drug infested neighborhoods, toxic attitudes and cultures can stunt growth. So repentance, or more appropriately, a correction of place, ways or views become vital for success. On a transatlantic voyage from the East to the West, the prodigal bird flew away. It wanted to be free, it thought. It flew and flew. Water everywhere. It had no safe place to land. Its survival, its very existence was at stake. It did like the prodigal son, it returned to a familiar setting, back to the ship, back to the ship of life that provided and provides both redemption and salvation through error correction, correction of ways. Call it repentance, if you like. That much I learned. _Assurance Izevbizua |
